While the idea that cosmetics shouldn’t be tested on or contain ingredients from animals might seem obvious to many, if not most, people today, once upon a time most cosmetic companies did business this way. A cruelty-free, vegetarian ethic of compassionate consumerism began with an ideal embodied by a company called Beauty Without Cruelty—philosophy, lifestyle and mission captured beautifully in a name that became a movement.
