The International Xylitol Conference comes at a crucial time in the debate on American dental care, specifically the role of fluoride in cavities. Fluoride is added to drinking water and oral hygiene products because of its so-called “cavityfighting” properties. However, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in a new report says that the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water will be reduced to 0.7 mg/l from the current range of 0.7 to 1.2 mg/l. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also set to review the maximum amount of fluoride allowed, which will be used to determine the legal fluoride level in drinking water sources. The study says that up to 40 percent of the U.S. population could be experiencing dental fluorosis and find their teeth mottled and weakened from too much fluoride.
